Exterior Coatings

Masonry surfaces, such as exterior walls, are among the largest surface areas exposed to weather conditions such as rain, dust, UV rays and fungus.

Watertightness (Impermeability) of external walls is usually achieved by providing adequate wall thickness, waterproofing, proper design of construction joints, surface rendering and finishes, which serve as a barrier against water ingress.

If the exterior walls are not waterproofed, the invading moisture can cause damp walls, which are excellent breeding grounds for mildew and mold. This damages the walls and leads to health problems for the occupants.

The use of either cement or general exterior acrylic paint is not an effective waterproof coating, as they do not create an impermeable envelope around the building. The coating should combine the properties of efficient waterproofing and aesthetics.

Cracks in Exterior Wall

Cracks in the walls occur due to several reasons, such as:

1. Dry shrinkage of concrete resulting from evaporation of water, thermal expansion and contraction of material
2. Subgrade settlement of earth in the foundation
3. Building loads
